Recruitment of Teachers Training Colleges for IT Essentials I&II Instructorship
The University of Dar es Salaam Computing Centre (UCC), the Cisco Networking Academy Program Regional Academy for Tanzania (CNAP-RA), is recruiting 7 zonal Teachers Training Colleges to become Local Academies for IT Essentials I&II curricula. The training is conducted at the UCC Ltd. branch in Arusha.The training, which will take 17 days, from 22nd August - 7th September 2005, and will enable the trained colleges to become Local Academies in the CNAP program in which the instructors will be able to conduct classes in an e-learning environment provided by the Cisco Networking Academy Program. The instructors currently in training come from the seven (7) zonal Teachers Training Colleges (TCs) of Morogoro Teachers College, Klerruu Teachers College, Tabora Teachers College, Marangu Teachers College, Butimba Teachers’ College, Mtwara Teachers College and Mpwapwa Teachers College. Each college sent two instructors to participate in the training. The training also includes an official from the Ministry of Education and Culture. The Director of the Department of Teacher Education in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Ms Rose C. Massenga who also enrolled in the Academy Orientation Course. The basic course which provides deep knowledge about the Networking Academy history and coverage, participation in the LDC countries, partners in the program, and issues of managing academies and classes for students enrolled in the academy. This is a compulsory course done in the first week of the training and serves as a pre-requisite for curricula instructor recruitment. This training is part of the project named ‘Implementing ICT in Teachers Colleges’ developed by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MoEC) in partnership with the Swedish Development Agency (Sida) with the aim of introducing ICT in schools in Tanzania. The main purpose of the project is to create a workforce of highly skilled teachers with the appropriate skills to apply ICT to teaching and learning to meet the main goal of improving the quality of education in teachers colleges and schools. To help meet this goal, a large investment is being made to equip all 34 colleges with new computers and broadband internet connection. Technicians and tutors will be trained to International standards and colleges will be supported by a project team based at the Lead College in Morogoro. Each college will have a laboratory of networked computers, an open access centre, seminar room and a provision for Educational Management Information Systems (EMIS). In the opening session of the training, Mr. Geoff Calder, the facilitator, informed instructors about the importance of the program and responsibilities they are taking as pioneers in this project. He also informed about the other trainings to be covered in the project including ICDL, Linux, Management Training and the EMIS. Talking to the instructors, the Director of the Department of Teacher Education in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Ms Rose C. Massenga said the instructors were expected to participate in the training with their students and the project mission in focus. They are the very persons who will convey the knowledge they get from the training to Tanzanian Teachers who will in turn go and deliver the knowledge to students. HP IT Essentials I&II is one of the various high quality up-to-date e-learning courses provided under the Cisco Networking Academy Program in Tanzania. Another course currently provided in the Networking Academy Program in Tanzania include the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) –the entry level to the networking professionalism. HP IT Essentials comes in two packages namely: IT Essentials I: PC Hardware and Software -IT Essentials I: PC Hardware and Software, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard Company, introduces students to information technology and data communications. This hands-on, lab-oriented course stresses laboratory safety and working effectively in a group environment. Students will learn how to build a computer and install different versions of the Windows operating system. Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a Certificate of Completion for IT Essentials I: PC Hardware and Software. Acquired competencies include: • Building a computer and installation of the motherboard, floppy and hard drives, CD-ROM, and video cards. • Installing and managing Windows operating systems. • Adding peripherals and multimedia capabilities. • Knowledge of local-area network architecture, networking protocols and the OSI Model, and TCP/IP utilities. • Connecting the computer to a local area network and to the Internet. command shells, and basic network use. • Explore GUI features including Applications Manager, Text Editor, printing, and mail. • Know basic administrative tasks with Windows 2000. IT Essentials I: PC Hardware and Software prepares students for the CompTIA A+ professional certification exam. IT Essentials II: Network Operating Systems IT Essentials II: Network Operating Systems, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard Company, is an intensive introduction to multi-user, multitasking network operating systems. This hands-on, lab-oriented course is designed to be an overview of network operating systems and specifically covers the Linux Red Hat Network operating system. Students will learn how to use the Linux operating system, the K Desktop Environment (KDE), and GNU Network Object Model (GNOME). This course will be a stepping stone to help prepare students for challenging careers, such as skilled hardware support professional and Linux support professional. Acquired competencies include: • Configuration of network services, including basic network security and troubleshooting. • Building a computer and installation of the motherboard, • Use fundamental command-line features of the Linux environment including file system navigation, file permissions, the vi text editor, command shells, and basic network use. • Explore GUI features including Applications Manager, Text Editor, • printing and mail. • Know basic administrative tasks with Windows 2000. IT Essentials II: Network Operating Systems, along with IT Essentials I, will help prepare students for the CompTIA Server+ certification exam.
